The government has decided to convene the monsoon session of Parliament from August 1 to September 8. Though the session normally commences around the middle of July, the government has delayed it by a fortnight to buy time for finalising crucial pieces of legislation, including the contentious Lokpal Bill.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee: ?There have been instances in the past also where the session has been held in August.?
As hinted earlier, the session is scheduled to last a week longer so that the two Houses have enough time to discuss and vote important Bills. The Bills lined up for the budget session had to be deferred because the two Houses wrapped up their sittings early to enable political leaders to campaign in Assembly elections.
