Las Vegas ESPN Radiothon Allows Fans to Help Charities (ContributorNetwork)

The ESPN 1100 sixth annual 24 Hour Radiothon charity event benefiting The Caring Place will take place July 22-23 at the Palms in Las Vegas. The event allows radio listeners to join their favorite celebrity or sports personality for a one-hour block of time on ESPN 1100. The event has a grown over the years and this year may have the best lineup since the radiothon began.

The Caring Place was established by Oncologist Dr. Mary Ann Allison and Connie Bernstein, wife of boxing analyst and Las Vegas icon Al Bernstein. Their goal is to provide free programs and services that complement medical care to those touched by cancer.

The Caring Center opened in 2008 with help from money raised by the annual ESPN 1100 Radiothon and the weekend charity auctions and events that surround the weekend festivities presided over by Al Bernstein and his wife Connie.

The radiothon includes big names from the sporting world, the entertainment world and local Las Vegas television and radio personalities. Film star and former boxer Mike Tyson hosts the 6 p.m. slot of the 24 hour event and fills in the last open spot. Tyson has been made the rounds in support of Hangover 2 recently and he has developed into a fun-loving interview, the opposite of his surly demeanor in his boxing days.

Other athletes appearing on the ESPN 1100 event are Bernard Hopkins, Larry Johnson and Moses Scurry. Hopkins is still active in boxing and one of the most opinionated sports figures when he gets behind a microphone. An hour with Hopkins has potential to explosive, especially if the listener with the winning bid has Donovan McNabb's cell phone number.

Larry Johnson does not do many interviews since ending his NBA career, which makes him an interesting addition to this year's lineup. Adding Moses Scurry with Larry Johnson is a fun combination but don't be surprised if ABC's Jimmy Kimmel joins the 1990 National Champion Runnin Rebels duo. Kimmel is a huge fan and former Las Vegas resident.

Carrot Top arrives for the midnight time slot and is another popular personality who has made Las Vegas his home. Carrot Top is another personality expected to draw big numbers in the bidding process. He cannot do his visual schtick but he will more than make up for it with his ADD personality.

There are several local television personalities available for bids in the radiothon including: Molly Sullivan of the Mountain Network, Kevin West News 3, Dave Hall and Ted Pretty both of Fox 5 News. Also making a special appearance is former Fox 5 anchor Lorraine Blanco, wife of ESPN Radio personality Mitch Moss.

Brent Musberger provides a national sportscasters perspective in the 4 p.m. time slot. Musberger has covered Super Bowls, NCAA National Championships in football and basketball among thousands of other live sporting events. Filling one hour of radio will be no problem for the national sportscasting legend.

All of the ESPN Radio and Fox Radio personalities will be on the air throughout the radiothon as well as former NFL Coach of the Year, Jim Fassel, who is now coaching the Las Vegas Locos. Anyone wishing to bid on the ESPN 1100 6th Annual 24 Hour Radiothon should click the link and get their bids in before the 7 p.m. July 15 deadline.

Todd Jacobs is a Las Vegas resident with knowledge of the city and Nevada's surrounding areas.
