Major crimes show a dip in first half of 2011 - Indian Express

The Delhi Police on Saturday claimed that incidents of crime in the Capital has decreased in the first half of this year, even as it announced fresh initiatives to better law and order.

According to Police Commissioner B K Gupta, heinous crimes have recorded a 2.7 per cent decrease in the first six months compared to last year?s figure. Heinous crimes include murder, rape, dacoity, robbery, kidnapping for ransom and riots.

?The crime per lakh population has decreased from last year?s rate of 313.6 to 311.23 this year,? Gupta said speaking at the half yearly Delhi Police?s press conference.

The Delhi Police has introduced 155 emergency response vehicles to respond to distress calls and preserve the scene of crime.

?We have got these vehicles and every police station will have one emergency response vehicle each,? he added.

On the setting up of model police stations, he said one police station in each of the 11 police districts will be declared a model police station within a month.

?These police stations will have improved infrastructure facilities for visitors and policemen. There will be effective complaints-redressal and feedback mechanism.The model police stations are instructed to have time-bound disposal of complaints,? he said.

The top cop said a select group of commandos are also being imparted advanced training in central paramilitary organisations.

?Presently, 6,209 constables are undergoing commando training. Out of this, 600 trainees will be given advanced training. NSG, CRPF, CISF and BSF will train them,? he said.
